B. Meredith, 31, a former resident of Sikes, and her niece, Bonnie Fay Dunn, 12, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Dunn, also natives of Sikes, were drowned in Lake Martin near Baton Rouge on Friday afternoon, July 4, when a boat in which they were riding overturned. The party of five, all former residents of Sikes, were riding in the motorboat when it apparently sprung a leak and overturned after filling with water. Mrs. Meredith was placed on the overturned boat while other members of the party were trying to rescue the girl, but Mrs. Meredith slipped off the boat and was drowned. The small boy was rescued and three members of the party made their way to shore. Both bodies were soon recovered but artificial respiration by a squad of Baton Rouge fireman was unsuccessful. Members of the boat party, in addition to the victims, were Clyde Dunn, of Baton Rouge, his six year old son, and Hester Thompson, of Baton Rouge. All are natives of Sikes. Double funeral services for the two victims were held at 3:30 o'clock Monday afternoon, July 7, from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Dunn, near Sikes, with the Rev. W. S.
