B. Durham, Jr. An accident involving a motorcycle and a jeep in Baton Rouge last Friday morning, resulted in the death of Charles B. Durham, Jr., 23 year old son of Charles B. Durham, Sr., rural mail carrier of Atlanta. According to reports, Charles was riding in the seat of the motorcycle and his two companions were on the motorcycle. One of the other men suffered a broken back and the other a broken leg. Both vehicles were headed toward Baton Rouge when the motorcycle slowed down at a bridge. The driver of the jeep, who was expected to pull along side of the motorcycle for a conversation, swerved too close to the motorcycle throwing it out of control of the driver. The machine hit the side of the bridge and young Durham suffered a fractured skull, which caused his death at the Lady of the Lake Sanitarium at 6:30 that night. Young Durham had only returned to Baton Rouge from Winnfield the day before his death. He had spent two weeks vacation in Atlanta with his father and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Durham. A graduate of Atlanta High School and Northwestern College, he was employed as a chemist at the Ethyl Corporation a year before he enlisted in the Navy. Following his discharge from service last summer he returned to his former position. Surviving besides his father and grandparents of Atlanta, are his wife, the former Jean Simmons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Simmons of Shreveport, who is now an instructor in a Lake Charles school, and an 18 months old son, Michael Ayrand. The remains were brought to the home of his grandparents Saturday and funeral services were conducted at the Sardis Baptist Church Sunday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. H. H. McBride, pastor First Baptist Church, Winnfield, officiating. Fraternity brothers of Northwestern acted as pallbearers, and music was furnished by the Atlanta Baptist Church choir. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
