All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: January 6, 1944 Winn Parish Enterprise Mrs. Elvira Durham Rounding out a long and useful life, having gone well past the Biblical promise of three score and ten and rearing three sons and two daughters in honor and useful achievements, Mrs. Elvira Durham, 82, one of the oldest and widely known women of the Hargis and Montgomery communities, died Thursday, December 9, at the home of her son, O. L. Durham, after an illness of several weeks. Widowed at an early age, Mrs. Durham was faced with the problem of rearing her family alone which failed to daunt her determination to carry on, which she did with courage, kindness, and loving devotion and unstinted generosity to her family and many friends. Having united with the Baptist Church 64 years ago, she lived a truly exemplary Christian life throughout the years. The deceased is survived by two daughters and three sons: Mrs. Edna Lovell, Albuquerque, N. M., Mrs. M. C. Dean, and O. L. Durham, Montgomery, La., W. T. Durham, Pineville, La., and J. E. Durham, Port Neches, Texas; also 25 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. She was also a sister of the late George T. Stroud of Ward One, Winn Parish. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. V. Fletcher a the Mars Hill Cemetery, with interment in the family plot there. Relatives from Winnfield attending the last rites were: Mrs. T. I. Stroud, widow of the late Geo. T. Stroud and her daughter, Mrs. Betty Gilcrease, granddaughter, Miss Doris Bell Whisonant, and grandson, Noah Gilcrease, Jr.
