Following the coroner's jury investigation a verdict of "justifiable homicide" was returned. Ellard, according to a telephone message of Deputy Black to Sheriff J. W. Payne of Natchitoches, threatened to kill Deputy Black and a Mr. Barnes, whom Black summoned from his automobile to assist in the arrest, joined the officer. It is alleged that Ellard reached under a pillow on his bed, supposedly to get a weapon, and it was then that Deputy Black fired. The bullet struck Ellard under the right eye, causing him to fall backward across the bed, dead. Mrs. Ellard witnessed the shooting of her husband by the officer. When officers from Natchitoches arrived at Goldonna no pistol or any other weapon was found under the pillow or any place about the bed, the investigation showed. The body was brought to the undertaking parlors of the Winnfield Furniture Co. here and prepared for burial, later taken to Trout where his parents reside.
