Emerson, Druggist, Dies Of Heart Attack John S. Emerson, prominent Winnfield druggist and former member of the State Pharmacy Board, died in a local hospital Saturday, May 9, after suffering a heart attack. He was 58 years old. As a member of the pharmacy board for six years as examiner in registering pharmacy school graduates to the profession. His term expired July 29 last year at which time he expressed a desire not to be reappointed, Eugene Vogt, secretary of the board, said at Ferriday. "Mr. Emerson was one of the state's leading pharmacists and contributed a lot to his profession in the state. North Louisiana and Winnfield have lost a valuable man," Vogt added. The druggist came to Winnfield in 1925 from Bryceland. He was graduated from the Emory University School of Pharmacy, Atlanta, Ga. For the past 34 years he was owner and operator of the New Winnfield Drug Company here. A civic leader, Mr. Emerson was Bethlehem Commander Knights Templar here, a member of the Masonic Lodge, El Karubah Shrine Temple in Shreveport, Winnfield Royal Arch Chapter of Masonic Body; Rotary Club, and First Methodist Church. ARTICLES PUBLISHED Several of his articles concerning professional aspects of the pharmacist were published in the Louisiana Pharmacist publication. One of Mr. Emerson's two sons, Capt. Samuel M. Emerson is a flight surgeon, stationed at Anchorage, Alaska and the other son, Lt. James Hall Emerson, is a pharmacist, stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base, Bossier City. Other survivors include his widow, Mrs. Harriet Emerson, Winnfield; his daughter, Miss Mercedes Emerson, New Orleans; three brothers, Dr. Arthur J. Emerson, Monroe; Harvey Emerson, Homer; Joe H. Emerson, Winnfield; four sisters, Mrs. Naomi Crawford, Winnfield; Mrs. Eugene Garrison, Ft. Worth, Texas; Mrs. Ernest Boone and Mrs. Roland Ingram, both of Birmingham, Ala.; one grandson, John Samuel Emerson. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 11, 1959, at the First Methodist church with the pastor, the Rev. R. H. Staples, officiating. Dr. F. C. Wren gave the eulogy, which had been the prior request of the deceased. Burial was in the Garden of Memories Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers were John S. Garrison, James R. Garrison, Harvey H. Emerson, Jr., George Emerson, Morris Crawford, Joe H. Emerson, Jr., Tommy Emerson, and J. B. McDonald.
