A retired tile setter and owner of Martel's Tile Shop, he died peacefully Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Mid City after a brief illness. He was 81, a resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Sikes. He was a U.S. Navy combat veteran of World War II, having fought and been wounded at the Battle of the Solomon Islands. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ethel Dupuis Emmons; three sons, Martel W. Emmons Jr. of Baton Rouge, Charles Emmons of Winnfield and Harold Emmons of Dry Prong; a daughter, Linda Poche of Baton Rouge; three grandchildren, Adam Emmons and Amy Emmons, both of Walker, and Katherine Poche of Denham Springs; three great-grandchildren, Abigail Jane, Garrett Adam and Ayla Alexis; three brothers, Robert Emmons of Sikes, Glen Roy Emmons of Shreveport and Fontaine Emmons of Monroe; and a sister, Elinor Hartsell of Hot Springs, Ark. Preceded in death by parents, Winfred S. and Clara Emmons; and a brother, W.S. Emmons Jr. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, March 22, 2004, at Greenoaks Funeral Home chapel, 9595 Florida Blvd. Visitation at the funeral home chapel from 10 a.m. until religious service at noon on Tuesday, March 23, 2004.
