He was a native of Winnfield and spent most of his lifetime in Shreveport where he was an accountant and hotel clerk, and in Winnfield where he was associated in the operation of a Flower Shop with his mother, Mrs. Josie Mathews. Both he and his mother had retired from business several years ago. Mr. Mathews was a member of the First Baptist Church. He attended Washington and Lee University and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was a grandson of the late Dr. J. J. Peters, prominent early physician of Winn Parish. Funeral services were conducted at Southern Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Tuesday with Dr. W. L. Holcomb, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery under direction of Southern. Cousins acted as pallbearers. They were Joe Weeks, Kermit Simmons, Don Price, James Weeks, Winfred Morgan, and A. B. Cox, Jr., Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Josie Mathews of Winnfield; two uncles, John J. Peters, Jr., of Winnfield and Hines Peters of Pineville; three aunts, Mrs. A. B. Collier of Baton Rouge, and Mrs. A. B. Cox and Mrs. Edwin Simonton, both of Shreveport.
