Erskins, 82, Succumbs at Sikes September 27 George W. Erskins, 82, died at his home in Sikes, Thursday, September 27, 1945, after an illness of several months. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Sikes Baptist Church of which the deceased was a member, with Mr. W. S. Emmons officiating. Interment was in the Sikes Cemetery. A retired farmer, Mr. Erskins was the last of eight children of Mrs. Charity A. and William A. Erskins, pioneers of Winn Parish. He was the uncle of General Graves B. Erskins who has been cited for his heroic work on Iwo Jima. Mr. Erskins was active in his community in civic and religious endeavors. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. J. B. Parker, Mrs. Mary Gulledge, Mrs. Ada Gates, Mrs. Bertie Miller, and Mrs. Vera McMurry, all of Sikes, and one son, Chester Erskins of Sikes.
