Sister Hurt In Rescue Try; 3 Year Old Negro Boy Killed By Car

A 3 year old St. Maurice Negro boy was killed and his 6 year old sister
seriously injured when she attempted to snatch him from the highway and both
were struck by a car Friday, March 4, at 5:30 p.m.

Dead is Arthur Lee Evans, son of R. C. and Lela Evans, who live near the St.
Maurice School.

State police said the child's parents told of guarded efforts to keep the
youngster inside the fenced yard for fear of traffic.  The highway from U. S.
84 to St. Maurice passes in front of the residence.  The boy darted into the
road, and his sister, Gloria Jean, went after him, officers reported.

Zuma Small, driver of the car, told officers he was blinded by the sun.  He is
janitor at the school and was enroute home after work.  Small had some of his
children in his car and told officers his first warning of danger was when he
struck the children.

The girl was hospitalized in Natchitoches.  She was expected to live, officers
said.
