All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** THE WINNFIELD-NEWS AMERICAN Friday, December 31, 1937 Will Eagles, Age 65, Veteran Employee of Post office, Dies Operated First Rural Mail Route From Here in 1909 Will Eagles, age 65, the first rural mail carrier of the Winnfield post office, died at his home here Tuesday night, following an illness of more than a year. Mr. Eagles was retired from the postal service January 31, 1936 after 25 years as a rural carrier and clerk in the local office. He entered the service in 1909 after rating highest in the competitive examination for the first rural route out of Winnfield. After three months, he gave up the route and became a clerk in the office which position he held until 1912 when he resumed the route service. He continued in this work until his retirement in January last year. He was born in Winn Parish January 30, 1882. He was a member of the First Methodist church and during his active years interested in the religious and civic life of the community. He is survived by his widow, two step-sons, John Grigsby of Winnfield and Tom M. Grigsby of Longview, Texas, one brother J. S. Eagles and one sister, Mrs. Tinnie Stroud of Winnfield. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the First Methodist Church with The Rev. G. A. Morgan, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church and Rev. B.C. Land, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Interment was in the Winnfield cemetery. Active pall bearers were P. Hugh Mercer, D. F. Shell, Charles Smith, S. E. Jenkins, H. A. Cockerham and O. O. Dickerson. Honorary pall bearers included all employees of the local post office, W. T. Norman, V. L. Brumfield, R. H. Fletcher, H. W. Bass, Dr. J. F. Faith, Dr. S. C. Fittz, S. G. Jackson, W. W. Grisby, Guy Johnson, Dan Page, A. W. Williamson, Troy Smith, B. W. Bailey, P. K. Abel, H. A. Dean, J. M. Hyde, Oscar Barton, Oscar Lattier, Joe Terrill, J. C. Brooks, Jim Shelton, W. W. Allen, N. M. Jackson, Maxwell Crowe, H. L. DeBray, Lee J. Grisby, J. E. Carter.
