All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: January 2, 1964 Winn Parish Enterprise News American Winnfield Negro Woman Is Killed In Auto Accident Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. here Wednesday for a Winnfield Negro woman who was killed December 26 when the car her husband was driving struck the French Fork bridge 12 miles east of Jena on U. S. 84. The victim was Bertha Farris, wife of Elijah "Spider" Farris, an employee of Jackson Motor Company. According to relatives, Farris was blinded by the sun and his car went off the highway into a bridge. His left arm was broken and he also suffered cuts on the mouth. The couple had been to Jonesville visiting Farris' brother. Survivors include four children, Vivian Farris, John Farris, both of Los Angeles, Calif., Betty Jo Farris, Oakland, Calif., and Elijah Farris, Jr., of Winnfield. Services were under direction of Ben Johnson Funeral Home with burial in the Winnfield Colored Cemetery.
