M. April 9th A paralytic stroke struck down Mr. J. M. Ferguson of Atlanta late Wednesday and he succumbed at 5 a.m. Thursday, April 9 at the age of 87 years. At the time of his death he was the oldest citizen of Ward Six and the father of a large family, a retired successful merchant and farmer. Mr. Ferguson was the guest of honor on November 7, 1934 at a dinner in his home at Atlanta at which all of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were present. Gathered there were all his descendants and during the course of the day he related many events of interest in his past life bearing on the early history of Winn Parish. Mr. Ferguson was born in Florida on November 7, 1848 and moved to Winn Parish in 1870. During his entire lifetime he resided in the Atlanta community. In 1877 he married Miss Rebecca Green of near Winnfield who at the age of 80 survives him. A successful merchant, he engaged in the mercantile business at Atlanta in 1903, having previously engaged in timber buying and with the Louisiana Sawmill Company at Whitford, La. Since he retired from business he farmed and raised stock on his holdings at Atlanta. Besides the widow he is survived by six living children, Mr. C. C. Ferguson, J. L. Ferguson, Mrs. M. F. Collier, Mrs. J. M. Neal, Mr. E. G. Ferguson, M. C. C. Ferguson, and Mr. J. D. Ferguson. Mr. E. G. Ferguson is police juror from Ward Six. In addition he has twenty surviving grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was a member of the Methodist Church and served in various capacities during his lifetime in the church organization. Funeral services are to be held in Atlanta Friday morning.
