All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: November 9, 1982 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Ida Wasson Finlay Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Wasson Finlay, 96, of Olla, La., were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 5, 1982, in the chapel of Haven Nursing Home in Columbia, La. Burial followed in the Nolley Cemetery in Jena. She died Tuesday morning at the nursing home where she had been a resident for many years. Mrs. Finley, who was born April 15, 1886, in Gansville Community in Winn Parish, moved with her family to Maple Street in Winnfield in 1903. She was a graduate of La. State Normal College (now Northwestern) in Natchitoches and she later attended La. State University in Baton Rouge, La. Polytechnic Institute (La. Tech) in Ruston, and Southwestern (U. Of S. La.) in Lafayette. Mrs. Finlay was retired after 37 years as an elementary school teacher. Afterward she served as a correspondent for a Monroe newspaper. While teaching, she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma professional teachers society and was also active in Home Demonstration Club work and in her church. Mrs. Finlay, who became a devout Christian in early life, was a former Bible class teacher, and she was a member of Olla Baptist church at the time of her death. She was married August 10, 1920 to Taylor Finlay, an employee of Tremont & Gulf Railroad, and they made their home for many years in Winnfield. While residing in Orange, Texas, her husband preceded her in death on December 3, 1943 and is interred in Jena. Survivors include her son, Taylor Finlay, Jr., and his wife, Charlotte, of Sacramento, California; two brothers, John Mack Wasson of Southern Pines, North Carolina and George Wasson of North Little Rock, Arkansas; two sisters, Mrs. W. W. (Eula) Curry of Tannehill Community, Winn Parish, and Mrs. Steve (Avis) Norris of Bossier City; and a host of nieces and nephews. Attending the funeral Tuesday in Columbia for Mrs. Ida Finlay were Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Sowers, R. D. Bevill and Mrs. Joyce Pasco of Winnfield, and Mr. and Mrs. Murphy Tannehill of Urania, all former students of Mrs. Finlay.
