Mrs. M. M. Fisher Succumbs Here Tuesday, July 15

81 Year Old Citizen Buried in Local Cemetery

Mrs. M. M. Fisher, 81, died at her home here Tuesday after a long illness. 
Following funeral services at the First Methodist Church Wednesday morning
conducted by Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the local Presbyterian Church, and
Rev. Mr. Townsend of the Hodge Methodist Church, burial was in the Winnfield
Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home.

The deceased was the widow of the late M. M. Fisher, an outstanding business
leader for years in Central Louisiana.  He was a large plantation owner in
Natchitoches Parish and when William Edenborn built the L. R. & N. Railroad
down the east side of Red River, he named the town of Clarence in honor of Mr.
Fisher's son, Clarence.

Soon after the turn of the century, the Fisher family moved to Winnfield.  Mr.
Fisher organized two banks in Winnfield and one in Jena, conducted a large
mercantile business here and operated his plantations on Red River.  He died
in 1918.

Mrs. Fisher was one of 14 children of Mr. and Mrs. Hartwell Hyde, pioneer
citizens of Montgomery.  The descendants of this couple now number several
hundred and many are prominent citizens in their respective communities and
have materially assisted in the upbuilding of North and Central Louisiana.

The deceased is survived by the following immediate members of her family:
three daughters, Mrs. G. B. Davis of Clarence, Mrs. C. W. Steinkamp of
Memphis, Tenn., and Mrs. R. F. Stovall of Dodson; one son, Clarence M. Fisher
of Winnfield; two brothers, Frank Hyde of Montgomery and Albert Hyde of
Zwolle; 14 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and scores of nieces and
nephews.
