Fletcher, Age 79, Of New Verda, Buried March 7th Jesse L. Fletcher, better known as "Uncle Jesse" to his friends, aged 79 years, passed away suddenly on March 6, 1933, at his home near New Verda, La. Death came as a result of heart failure caused by acute indigestion with the illness of only twenty-four hours. He was born January 11, 1854, in Pike County, Miss., moved to La. (Grant Parish), in 1857 (note: Winn Parish, as Grant was formed from Winn c. 1868), being one of a family of fourteen, six boys and eight girls. May 28, 1876 he was married to Julia Teddlie raising a family of only three, two boys and one girl, B. D. Fletcher, William Z. Fletcher, and Mrs. Tennie Purvis, deceased last November. Uncle Jesse was the oldest citizen of the Verda and Iatt Communities. He was always jovial and loved by all who knew him. Before school busses were used to transfer the children to this school, Uncle Jesse drove the children to and from the school in a large covered wagon for several years. The deceased is survived by his wife and two sons, B. D. Fletcher, of New Verda, La., William Z. Fletcher, Jacksonville, Illinois, and one sister, Mrs. Anne Stevens. Funeral services were held March 7, 1933 at the Iatt Church. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery there.
