Fletcher, College of Music Department Dies W. Z. Fletcher, 75, one time head of the music department at Arkansas State College, and a teacher of voice for many years, died May 22, 1955 at Verda. Mr. Fletcher, who retired as a member of the music department faculty at ASC in 1952 and moved to Colfax, La., was visiting relatives at Verda at the time of his death. He had suffered from a heart ailment for more than 20 years. He and his wife were both talented musicians. In 1920 he became head of the music department at Arkansas State College. They left ASC in 1925 and moved to Jacksonville, Ill. There he was head of the music department at McMurry College for Women. After eight years at McMurry, Mr. Fletcher suffered a severe heart attack and was away from the teaching field for two years. He and Mrs. Fletcher moved to Jonesboro, Arkansas again in 1935 and opened a studio. He also served as director of the choir at the First Christian Church. In 1940 Mr. Fletcher returned to the ASC music department. He and Mrs. Fletcher continued to operate their studio until her death in 1942. He continued his work at the college until 1952. At that time he retired and moved to Colfax to make his home with Mr. and Mrs. Gus Hodnett. He had been serving as piano instructor in the Colfax school. Survivors include one sister in law, Mrs. B. D. Fletcher, Lake Charles; four nieces and five nephews, and other relatives. Burial was in the cemetery at Jonesboro, Ark. Attending the funeral from Winnfield was Mrs. Lucille Dyson, a cousin of Mr. Fletcher.
