Trooper Floyd was the brother of Mrs. J. P. Hemphill of Winnfield, and was well known in Winn. Two Jena painters, Martin Jackson and Luther Pearson, are being held under guard at the Pineville Charity Hospital with no charges filed, pending the outcome of Pearson's condition. The two were shot by a posse of troopers and sheriff's deputies after being caught in a field about one mile from Floyd's home. Pearson is in a critical condition from a stomach wound. Jackson suffered a broken arm from a bullet. No motive for the shooting was established, although it was reported that Trooper Floyd stopped Jackson and Pearson about 9:30 Saturday night and questioned them about driving while drinking. Floyd went off duty and home to bed an hour later. He was called from his house about 12:30 and shot through the heart. His son, Donald, was killed when he grabbed his father's revolver and dashed out of the house firing at the killers. Funeral services were at 2:30 P.M. Monday at the First Baptist Church, Jena, with burial under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Burial was in Beulah Cemetery.
