T. Heflin of Winnfield and the late Sheriff W. T. Heflin of Winn Parish, died of suffocation in a fire which partially destroyed her home at 1827 Stephens Street in Shreveport early Sunday morning. Mrs. Fowler, wofe of J. W. Fowler, general manager of Frost Hardwood Floors Co., suffered second degree burns about the face and her legs, according to Dr. Charles S. Boone, deputy coroner of Caddo Parish. Mr. Fowler was hospitalized for shock as a result of Mrs. Fowler's death. Assistant Fire Chief W. J. Cook said the fire started from an undetermined cause in the living room of the two bedroom home at about 5 a.m. Police Patrolmen Bill Beckett and James E. Lanigan, who first saw the fire and reported it by radio, said they found the husband in the backyard of the residence crying out for help. The officers were driven back by smoke when they attempted to enter the house to rescue Mrs. Fowler. A few minutes later District Fire Chief T. G. Mangham and Fireman E. A. McKinley were forced from the home by smoke. Mangham was overcome by smoke and had to be helped from the residence. Wneh firemen were able to enter the home after water had been poured on the flames, they found Mrs. Fowler lying unconscious on the floor, near her bed. She died within a few minutes after the ambulance had taken her to a local hospital. Rev. R. McNair Smith, pastor of the Fairfield Avenue Presbyterian Church, officiated at the funeral services in the chapel of the Osborn Funeral Home. Burial was in the Forest Park Cemetery. Born in Winnfield February 8, 1897, Mrs. Fowler resided in Shreveport for 28 years. Besides her husband, Mrs. Fowler is survived by one son, Jack H. Fowler, Tyler, Texas; her mother, Mrs. W. T. Heflin and one sister, Miss Eva Heflin, of Winnfield; two brothers, Dr. C. M. Heflin and H. L. Heflin, both of Baton Rouge. Besides the family in Winnfield and Baton Rouge, also attending the funeral sere Dr. Heflin's daughter, Marshall Ann Heflin of Baton Rouge and the deceased's aunt, Mrs. L. D. Harvey of Alexandria, Mr. and Mrs. Don Robbins of New Orleans, Bryant Sholars of Alexandria, and Louis Sholars of Winnfield.
