Sheriff Page said 48-year old Dewey Franks of Winnfield was swimming in a pond just off Louisiana Highway 499 near Joyce when the drowning occurred. According to Sheriff Page, the Sheriff's Office received the call about the drowning at 7:15 p.m., but Franks' body was not recovered until 10 p.m. Winn Parish Coroner Dr. Randy Williams pronounced Franks dead at the scene. Sheriff Page said the Winnfield Fire Department and members of the Winn Parish Citizens Club helped his department recover the body. Funeral services for Franks will be held Thursday, June 10, at 10 a.m. in the Southern Funeral Home Chapel. Brother Bert Beams will officiate. A veteran of World War II, Franks is survived by two daughters, Melody Franks and Melissa Franks, both of New Mexico; sisters Mrs. Leroy Maxey, Mrs. J. D. Higdon, and Mrs. James Bruce, all of Winnfield, and Mrs. Charlie Armstrong of Kelly; and several nieces and nephews.
