Col. J. B. Francis, Former Winnfield Resident, Dies According to a news release this week, Lieut. Col. Julian B. Francis, Jr., 29, a former resident of Winnfield and Alexandria, has been killed somewhere in the Pacific area. The source of the message sent to his wife in Colorado did not state whether death occurred in actual combat or by accident. Lt. Col. Francis is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. (Ben) Francis of Baton Rouge. The family resided in Winnfield on Main Street about 20 years ago and Mr. Francis operated a barber shop here. Besides his wife and parents, he leaves one sister, Mrs. Iowa Hernandez of Baton Rouge, and two brothers, Bryan Francis of New Orleans and Lieut. Fred Francis of Camp Blanding, Fla. Co. Francis graduated from Bolton High School in June of 1931 and received his degree from Louisiana State University in 1938, when he graduated with the rank of second lieutenant in the army infantry reserve. He was called to active duty during 1940 and went to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, for a year's training, after which he was sent ot Hawaii. Here he met and married the former Miss Ann Galene Dooley of Nebraska, and army nurse who was stationed on the island. They were both in Hawaii at the time of the Jap attack on Pearl Harbor. After Col. Francis was sent into the battle zone, Mrs. Francis returned to the states. He has been on an island somewhere in the Pacific area. His wife has been lead to believe from recent letters that he had served his time overseas, was expecting a change of station, and would be coming to the United States on leave.
