J. E. Gaar At Hudson Sunday Founder of the Church of The Nazarene Died Oct. 17th To pay tribute to the life and work of the Rev. J. E. Gaar, who died in Des Moines, Iowa, October 17, a memorial service will be held by the Hudson Church of the Nazarene on Sunday, October 21, it was announced this week by Rev. R. L. Daily, pastor. The services will begin at 10:00 Sunday morning and will be conducted by Rev. Daily. Rev. Gaar was the founder of the Church of the Nazarene which was organized by a group withdrawing from the Methodist Protestant church. For many years he was associated with his brother, the Rev. W. M. D. Gaar at Hudson in the camp meeting activities there. About 1907 he with his family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where he was appointed president of a church school. Because of his religious zeal and forceful delivery he became known over a wide section of the United States and was in demand at camp meeting services in the south and the north. His last visit to Winn Parish, his native home, was in 1943 and for the past two years he has been in failing health that prevented him from active work in his church. He is survived by his widow and a number of children all of whom reside in or near Des Moines.
