All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: July 30, 1970 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Mrs. Elgie Sikes Gaar Funeral Set Thursday, 2:30 Mrs. Shelby Gaar, the former Miss Elgie Sikes, of Winnfield, died in a local hospital Wednesday, July 29, 1970, after many months of illness. She was 60 years of age, and was a retired teacher. Funeral services have been set for 2:30 Thursday in the First Baptist Church with Dr. W. L. Holcomb, former pastor, of Pineville, officiating. Burial will follow in Garden of Memories. The body will be at Southern Funeral home until time of the last rites. Mrs. Gaar was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Redden Sikes, natives of the Gaars Mill Community, where she was born and reared. She was a graduate of the Gaars Mill High School and of Louisiana Tech, and spent most of her teaching career as Home Economics instructor in the Dodson High School. For a short period she was Assistant Home Demonstration Agent in Bienville Parish. Mrs. Gaar was very active in the First Baptist Church, serving many years as superintendent of the Junior Department. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and of Alpha Beta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, a professional organization for women teachers. She is survived by her husband, Shelby Gaar, Winnfield; two sisters, Mrs. Dayton Hammons of Shreveport and Mrs. James E. Dark of Winnfield; one brother, D. E. Sikes, Winnfield; and eight nieces and nephews.
