All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: January 15, 1950 & February 5, 1959 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Article No. 1 Eugene Garrett, Ward Eight School Board Member, Stricken Eugene Garrett, 43 year old Ward Eight School Board member, was fatally stricken with a heart attack at his residence near Calvin, Saturday, January 10. Funeral services were held at Bethlehem Baptist Church Sunday at 2 p.m., with Rev. R. F. Hancock and Rev. Harris of Olla officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Garrett, who operated a store near Calvin, had been a member of the Parish School Board for the past four years, his present term expiring December 31, 1960. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and was a veteran of five years service in the U. S. Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Garrett, two daughters, Janet and Beth, and a son, Eugene Dwayne, all of Calvin; four sisters, Mrs. Gilbert Carpenter, Mrs. R. C. Bartlett, and Mrs. L. W. Price, all of Calvin, and Mrs. Henry Bates of Winnfield; and his mother, Mrs. Jeanette Garrett of Calvin. Active pallbearers were Al Walker, John Peters, Jr., Hershel Lowe, Travis Taylor, Everett Thurmond, and W. H. Collins. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Winn Parish School Board. Article No. 2 Mrs. Garrett Is Named To Term On School Board Mrs. Gertrude Garrett, Friday, received her commission appointing her to fill the unexpired term of her husband, the late Eugene Garrett, on the Winn Parish School Board. Representing Ward Eight on the school governing body, Mrs. Garrett becomes the first woman to serve on the board. Under her appointment, she will serve until December 30, 1960, expiration date of the term to which her husband was elected four years ago. She will attend her first meeting at the regular February meeting of the Board on Monday night, February 12.
