Death Claims Mrs. Mattie Garner Saturday, Mar. 21

Mrs. Mattie Garner, 83, resident of the Mt. Zion-Wheeling Community died in a
Winnfield hospital March 21, after a short illness.  Funeral services were
conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Mt. Zion Methodist Church with Rev. D. S.
Durand, pastor and Mrs. Lula Wardlow officiating.  Burial was in the Mt. Zion
Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home.  

Acting as pallbearers were grandsons-in-law, Jack Smith, Ervin Neal, David
Ward, Paul Downs, Willie Duffy, Marvin Jowers, Frank Bandy, and Walter Dodson.

Mrs. Garner was the former Miss Mattie Hallmark of the Mt. Zion Community
before her marriage to the late Mr. John Garner, who preceded her in death
several years.  She joined the Mt. Zion Methodist Church in her early
childhood days and was a faithful member until her death.

Surviving are five sons, Paul, Odis, Arnold and J. E., Jr., of Montgomery,
Eugene Garner of Baton Rouge; three daughters, Miss Mal Garner, Mrs. Richard
Horn, Mrs. Pearl Jennings, all of Montgomery; 28 grandchildren and one great,
great grandchild.
