All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: April 6, 1983 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Mrs. Mary Gates Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Mary Smith Gates, 88, of West Monroe were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery near Sikes with Reverend Jack Head officiating and arrangements under direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of West Monroe. Mrs. Gates died at 9:15 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 1983 at Glenwood Regional Medical Center after a long illness. She was a long time former resident of the Mineral Springs Community near Sikes in Winn Parish and a member of the Friendship Baptist Church. Mrs. Gates was preceded in death by her husband, the late Wm. Ira Wayland Gates of Lake Providence, and her elder granddaughter, the late Carol Gates Griffin of Houston, Texas. Survivors include five sisters, Bessie Hinton and Lessie Andrews, both of West Monroe, Ruby Dulaney of Sikes, Vera Kelly of Monroe, and Alvene Chitty of Gonzales; granddaughters, the former Barbara Gates recently of Lake Providence, Pamela and Melissa Griffin of the new Orleans area and Melanie and Lori Whatley, recently of Lake Providence; also a number of nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Pallbearers were Walter Gates, Jr., Lee Gates, Jimmy Dulaney, Mike Creel, Owen Thompson, Mike Hinton, Terrell Thompson, and Jimmy Thompson.
