Gates, Pioneer Resident of Winn, Is Dead Final rites for Elijah Cicero Gates, 61 year old Sikes resident, were conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Friendship Baptist Church, near Sikes, with the Rev. Willie James, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Acting as pallbearers were Vinson Simmons, Horace Simmons, Malcolm Simmons, Pierce Simmons, and Mickey Simmons. Mr. Gates, father of Jack Gates, executive editor of the Monroe News-Star World, died of a heart attack in a Winnfield hospital Monday night. He was a member of a pioneer Winn Parish family, was a farmer, a Mason, and a member of the Friendship Baptist Church. In addition to his son, Mr. Gates is survived by his wife, Mrs. Addie Simmons Gates, Sikes; and four daughters, Mrs. Floyd Bass of Jonesboro; Mrs. Ernest Culver, Sikes; Mrs. Louis Hickman, Shreveport; and Mrs. Laverne Reynolds, Dallas, Texas. He also leaves one brother, C. F. Gates of California; one sister, Mrs. Joe Davis of Dodson; and 13 grandchildren.
