M. Gates, 83, Succumbs; Rites At Sikes Oliver Monroe Gates, 83, of Winnfield, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 12, 1973 in a local hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Sikes Baptist Church with Rev. Willie James officiating. Interment, under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield, was in the Sikes Cemetery. A retired railroad employee, Mr. Gates was a native of Winn Parish. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Clara Gates of Winnfield; one son, Grayson Gates of Winnfield; four daughters, Mrs. Homer Smith of Winnfield, Mrs. Thomas Smith of Bastrop, Mrs. Ruth Brown of Fallbrook, California, and Mrs. J. W. Ryals of West Monroe; two brothers, Sam Gates of Dodson and Dewey Gates of Monroe; two sisters, Mrs. Jimmy Busby of Crowville and Mrs. Gene Holloway of Monroe; 16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
