Gates, foreman of the car shops of the Tremont Railway was killed last Thursday night at about 11:30 while he and Mr. John Ford were returning to Winnfield on the Calvin Road. Mr. Gates was driving the car at a rapid rate and failed to see the sharp turn of the road where it intersects the Pershing Highway, until too close to slow down to make the curve. Mr. Gates was 42 years of age, has a wife and four children, Lawrence Gates of Rochelle, Misses Cleo and Lucille, and a baby boy, James Willard Scott. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon, interment being in the Winnfield Cemetery by the Masons.
