A. "Billy" Gates, 70 year old retired Sikes merchant and farmer, were held in Sikes Saturday at 3 p.m. He died of a heart attack Friday morning after being in poor health for a number of years. Rites were held in the Sikes Baptist Church with Rev. Clovis Cole and Rev. Edward Smith officiating. Burial was in Sikes Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Mr. Gates was a member of one of Winn's oldest families, being the son of the late Frank and Dora Brister Gates. He was a member of the Baptist Church for many years. He operated a store in Sikes several years ago, and farmed as long as his health permitted. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Alice Gates; two sons, Relton of Shreveport and Arley of Farmerville; two daughters, Mrs. Zelma Thigpen of Sikes and Mrs. Eva Roberts of Chatham; 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild; two brothers, Clinton Gates of Goldonna and Cicero Gates of Dodson, Route 1; one sister, Mrs. Delia Gates Davis of Dodson, Route 1. Pallbearers were Lee Gates, Thomas Ray Gates, Huey Gates, Clarence Thompson, Richard Griggs, Alvey Gates, and Archie Lee Gates.
