Olive Baptist Church Grambling, Louisiana Reverend B. V. Bissic, Pastor James Andrew Gaulden (J. Andrew), the first son of Johnnie Lee Gaulden Prescott and Jim Gaulden, departed this life on Tuesday, February 6, 1996. He joined the Mt. Olive Baptist Church at a young age while residing with his grandfather, Andrew Gaulden, one of the founding fathers of this church. For James, the pursuit of knowledge was his trademark. His passions were reading, writing, and orations. He loved his family and fellow man. During his career, he was principal of three public schools; Englewood Elementary of Shreveport, Louisiana; Abbeville High School of Abbeville, Louisiana; and Pinecrest High School of Winnfield, Louisiana, respectively. He worked hard and strong for equal salaries and equal rights for Louisiana black school teachers as Field Secretary during the pre-desegregation era. James was employed as Program Director for the Economic Opportunity Board of Riverside County in California; he was Grambling State University's first Public Relations Director, and was responsible for publishing the University's first Gramblinite paper and the first yearbook. He retired from Grambling State University in 1981 as its first Historian. James was a published author of both fiction and non-fiction short stories. He was a featured columnist for several newspapers during his lifetime: The Houston Informer; The Shreveport Sun; The Los Angeles Sentinel; and The Denver Sun, respectively. He was publisher of a magazine called Negro Louisiana in the 1950s, and a newspaper, The Grambling News, in the 1970s. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Helen Norsworthy Gaulden; son, Jimmy Frank; daughter, Barbara; granddaughter, Daphne; grandson, Mark. Also he leaves his two brothers, Reuben L. Gaulden and Edwin Prescott; two sisters, Milby Ford and Rosemary Montgomery; and numerous nephews and nieces. Many relatives and friends celebrate the life of J. Andrew Gaulden.
