Gibbs, Former Mayor, Dies in Monroe Hospital Succumbs To Several Weeks' Illness On Last Saturday, Dec. 2 John R. Gibbs, age 64, of West Monroe, a former Mayor of Winnfield, died at a Monroe hospital early last Saturday morning following an illness of several weeks. Funeral services were held at the residence at 210 North Seventh Street at West Monroe Sunday afternoon at three o'clock with the Rev. C. K. Smith, pastor of the First Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. E. E. Huntsberry, pastor of the First Baptist Church there. Interment was made in the Hasley Cemetery. Mr. Gibbs has made his home in West Monroe since 1926 when he moved there from New Orleans, where he resided during the time he served as State Fire Marshal of Louisiana. Prior to his residence in New Orleans he and his family were residents of Winnfield for many years, and where he was active in religious, civic, and business circles, and served as Mayor of Winnfield for three terms. He also served as alderman in West Monroe in 1930. He is survived by his widow, who while residing in Winnfield was a talented and widely known instructor in piano music, one dauthter, Mrs. J. Atwood Taylor and a son, Chrles B. Gibbs, both of Bradenton, Florida.
