A. and B. O. Bass of Winnfield attended the funeral of their nephew, Ensign Dewey L. Gilbert, 24, which was held in Bastrop Wednesday of this week. Ensign Gilbert was one of two naval fliers who were killed June 22 when a plane which they had taken up on a familiarization flight crashed at the Wedell-Williams airport near New Orleans, the Eighth naval district announced. The other flier was Edison Cecil Huey, 26, aviator machinist's mate, first class, a native of Seattle, Wash. The cause of the crash was not determined but eye witnesses said the fliers apparently were unable to bring the plane out of a spiral. Ensign Gilbert is a native of Winnfield and resided here with his parents, until 1932, when he moved to Bastrop with them. His mother is the former Miss Inez Bass, sister of W. A. and B. O. Bass of Winnfield. Besides his parents, he also leaves his wife who resides in New Orleans.
