Edgar Green Dies From Burns Received When Plane Explodes Remains Are Expected To Arrive Here Some Time This Week End 1st Lt. Edgar Green, husband of the former Miss Thelma Louise Horton of Winnfield, died Tuesday, June 5 at McKinney, Texas, from burns received when the Army plane in which he was an invited passenger, exploded as the plane attempted to take off after refueling. The accident occurred on Monday and Lt. Green lived until the following day. According to reports, Lt. Green, bombardier, based at Big Springs, Texas, was invited to go on a fishing trip to Jackson, Miss., with several other officers. They left Big Springs Saturday and were on the return flight when the accident occurred. Funeral Plans Incomplete Lt. Green's wife and small daughter, Judith Ann, who resided with him at Big Springs and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Green, Sr., of Beardstown, Ill., were expected to arrive in Winnfield Thursday. Mr. N. L. Horton, father in law of Lt. Green, stated that funeral plans had not been made, pending arrival of the family and the release of the remains by the Army which was making an investigation of the accident. Cited For Outstanding Performance A bombardier in the Army Air Corps, Lt. Green was wounded in action in Italy April 28, 1944. During his combat service in Italy he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, six Oak Leaf Clusters to the Air Medal, and the Purple Heart. He wore the European Theater ribbons with two stars. Upon his promotion to First Lieutenant, he was given the presidential citation for outstanding performances in his group. He spent from Sept. 1943 until July 13, 1944 in England and North Africa, at which time he returned to the states. No. 2 Last Rites Held For Lt. Edgar Green Saturday, June 9th Last rites were held for First Lt. Edgar Green, 26, an airplane crash victim, at the Winnfield Baptist Church Saturday afternoon, June 9. Rev. H. H. McBride, Rev. Alwin Stokes, and Rev. Harvey B. Hysell, local pastors, were in charge of the services. Interment was in the Winnfield Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home. Lt. Green was seriously injured in an airplane crash at McKinney, Texas June 4, and died of burns June 5 in a McKinney hospital. He and his wife, the former Thelma Louise Horton of Winnfield, and their small daughter, Judith Ann, resided at Big Springs, Texas, before the accident. Surviving Lt. Green besides his wife and daughter are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Green, Sr., of Beardstown, Ill. Pallbearers were Joe H. Emerson, E. H. Farr, T. G. Kelly, W. B. Willis, Ray Jenkins, D. L. Hoffman, Harper Terrell, and D. L. Durrett.
