W. M. Grice, 78, well known throughout Winn Parish as "Uncle Will," who died Sunday at his home on the Tullos highway after an illness of several months. Rites were conducted by Rev. St. Andries, Rev. B. G. Dyess, and Rev. J. A. McMurry, and interment was in the Old Union Cemetery under the direction of the Edmonds Funeral Home. Pallbearers were H. K. Porter, Harmon Porter, Bowman Wright, Jimmie Keith, Ralph Frazier, and Lee Dunn. Reverend Grice was born August 24, 1869, moved to Louisiana in his childhood and spent the balance of his life in Winn Parish. He was married to Sara "Sally" Wright March 15, 1890 and to this union were born seven children. He was ordained to the Baptist ministry in August, 1901, and served as a preacher for 47 years. Known as the 'daddy' of the Old Union Church, he was pastor there for 14 years and assistant pastor until his health failed. He was known among his friends for his many acts of kindness and for visiting the sick and needy, and was loved by all who knew him. He is survived by two sons, Arthur Grice of Winnfield and Oscar Grice of Slidell; four daughters, Mrs. James I. Porter, Mrs. Otis Wood and Mrs. W. S. Dunn, Winnfield, and Mrs. T. P. Ingles of Texas City, Texas; a brother, Jesse Grice of Winnfield; three half-brothers, "Bud" Grice, Winnfield, William Grice of Georgetown, and J. T. Sanders of Smackover, Ark.; two half sisters, Mrs. J. J. Bedgood and Mrs. Elizabeth Atkins of Winnfield; 27 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. A son, Earl Grice preceded him in death eight months ago.
