Groves Is Buried at Atlanta Monday Afternoon John Basil Groves, 69, succumbed at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. E. Parham, Winnfield, Sunday, February 27, 1944, at 4 p.m. as a result of a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held at the home of his daughter, Monday at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Alwin Stokes of Winnfield and the Rev. E. J. Phares, pastor of the Goodpine Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Atlanta Cemetery. Pallbearers were Asa Buffington, Kelly Broussard, Mike Shetley, Volmer Bowen, Robert Maxey, and Al Tracy. Mr. Groves was born in Vienna, Ill., in 1874, and moved to Winn Parish 47 years ago. He was employed by the Atlanta Lumber Company for many years and later by the Thomas Lumber Company of Winnfield before he retired. He had been a resident of Winnfield for the past fifteen years and a member of the W. O. W. for 36 years. Mr. Groves united wit the Atlanta Baptist Church in 1914. Surviving the deceased are two daughters, Mrs. C. H. Roden and Mrs. H. E. Parham, of Winnfield; two grandchildren, Marlin Parham of Winnfield and Mrs. E. C. Bethard of Alexandria; three sisters, Mrs. Gertie Marshall of Marion, Ill., Mrs. A. T. McInturff of Marion, Ill., Miss Maggie Groves, Pontiac, Ill, and a host of nieces and nephews. Out of town friends and relatives attending the funeral were Mrs. A. T. McInturff, Marion, Ill., Miss Maggie Groves, Pontiac, Ill, Mrs. Ray McInturff, Charleston, Ill., Mrs. E. Perryman, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Balhm, Mrs. Webb Sutton, Miss Opal Sutton, Alexandria; Mr. and Mrs. S. P. B. Gresham, Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Gresham, Atlanta; Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Bethard, Alexandria; Carl Gresham, Mrs. Ida McElroy, Atlanta; Mr. and Mrs. Dallas McElroy of Chestnut; Mr. and Mrs. Allen Parham, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Ruddel, Olla; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Parham, Urania.
