Guthrie, 32, of Calvin, was killed last Thursday after being thrown from a lumber truck when it went out of control about one mile south of the Goldonna Road on the Calvin-Gum Springs gravel, reports Winn Sheriff C. M. Robinson. Roy Mercer, Guthrie's brother in law, was driving the truck when the accident occurred. Guthrie, with his mother, Mrs. Carrie Guthrie, and his sister, Maud Guthrie, were passengers and were enroute from Mansfield to their house. Guthrie was on the back of the lumber float with some furniture they were moving. According to reports from the family, they unexpectedly met another vehicle and Mercer swerved to pass it. Sheriff Robinson stated that the lumber truck traveled 174 feet down the right ditch, came back onto the road, and went into the ditch on the opposite side after passing the other vehicle. Guthrie was thrown into the ditch and suffered fatal injuries including a broken neck and fractured skull. Funeral services were held Friday at 3 p.m. in Bethlehem Baptist Church, Rev. J. D. Boyd of the Mansfield Church of Christ officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers. Survivors are his mother, Mrs. Carrie Guthrie, Route 4, Winnfield; four sisters, Mrs. Roy Mercer, Mrs. Marshall Norman, Mrs. Fred McNeil, and Miss Maud Guthrie, all of Route 4, Winnfield. Pallbearers were W. H. Collins, R. C. Bartlett, Gilbert Carpenter, Lamar Stevens, Marshall Norman, and Homer Harper.
