R. Gates, 86, Dies; Burial Held At Sikes Funeral services for Robert R. Gates, 86, of Joyce, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Southern Funeral Home with Revs. Jimmy Yocum and J. L. Holt officiating. Burial was in Sikes Cemetery. Mr. Gates died Wednesday, January 17, 1973 in a local hospital after a short illness. He was a Sikes native, a retired employee of the La. Department of Highways, and a member of East Winnfield Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Hershal Gates of Oregon and Edward R. Gates of Monroe; five daughters, Mrs. Essie Boles, Mrs. Vada Spangler, and Mrs. Gladys Lowery, all of Joyce, Mrs. Zella Hancock of Monroe and Mrs. Alma Sandifer of Winnfield; two brothers, Sam Gates of Dodson and Oliver Gates of Winnfield; one half-brother, Dewey Gates of West Monroe; two half-sisters, Mrs. Jewel Holloway of Monroe and Mrs. Letha Busby of ________ville; 24 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Jimmy Ray Spangler, Mike Power, Cleve Parent, Donnie Ray Womack, Glen Mathews, and Dennis Bartley.
