Funeral Held Tuesday Funeral services for A. S. Bass, 59, who died suddenly of a heart attack at his home here Sunday night were held from the First Methodist Church here Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. Dr. B. C. Land, a close personal friend of the deceased, assisted by Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, and K. W. Dodson, pastor of the First Methodist Church, conducted the last rites. Pallbearers were M. W. Powers, John J. Peters, George Smith, S. J. Harper, W. T. Norman, John L. Calhoun, John Mosley, and H. L. Turner. A large number of out of town relatives and friends attended the funeral. Among the relatives were two brothers, Ben Bass of Campti, J. W. Bass of Boyce, La.; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Dorman of Oakdale, La., and Mrs. Lillian Beaulieu of Little Rock, Ark. Other relatives were Mrs. Elton Wilson of Dayton, Texas, Mrs. Earl Kline of Little Rock, Ark., Mrs. F. E. Strother of Bunkie, La., Mrs. Lottie Smith and Mrs. Lee Aymond of Alexandria, La., Mr. and Mrs. Francis Heard of Ruston, Mrs. Ophelia Welch of Ruston, Mr. and Mrs. C. O'Neal of Alexandria, Mr. and Mrs. George Hammer of Jonesboro, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hanna of Jonesboro, Mr. and Mrs. Brack Luttrell of Boyce, Miss Lily May Averre of Oil City, La., Miss Melba May Averre of Campti, Miss Beatrice Chapman of Bunkie, Miss Barbara King of Jonesboro, Roy Dorman of Campti, Edwin Banks of Colfax, and G. Harrell of Baton Rouge. Mr. Bass was a Spanish-American War veteran. He was sergeant in one of the companies of Colonel Duncan H. Hood's regiment, known as the First U. S. Volunteers. He was a member of the W. S. Stevens Camp, Spanish-American War veterans, of Alexandria. At the time of his death he was bridge inspector for the Louisiana Highway Commission. Mr. Bass is survived by his widow, three sons, H. W. Bass, marshal of Winnfield, Herman and Floyd Bass, two daughters, Bunah May and Lillian Bass, all of Winnfield. ===== Submitter: Greggory E. Davies Date: 20 June 2004 Source: Winn News American July 14, 1939 Billy Bass Fatally Injured When Hit By Truck Accident Occurs at Pollock Where Boy Was Visiting Funeral services for Billy Bass, the 11 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. herman Bass, who died from injuries received when he was hit by a truck at Pollock Tuesday, were held here Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock. The rites were conducted by the Rev. G. A. Morgan, pastor of the First Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Interment was in the local cemetery. The boy was visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. McMain, at Pollock, when he attempted to cross the road behind one car and was struck by another coming in the opposite direction. He was knocked to the pavement and so hard was the impact that he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, a compound fracture of the leg, and other internal injuries from which he was unable to recover. The injured boy was rushed to an Alexandria hospital by Ed Gamble of Selma, around whose car he attempted to pass, and after more than an hour's feverish work, physicians and attendants were unable to give Billy relief. Billy is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bass, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. McMain, who reside at Pollock, and other relatives. ====== Submitter: Greggory E. Bass Dies In Collision Friday Funeral services for Burney Oliver Bass, 60 year old former Winnfield resident, were held here Monday at Southern Funeral Home chapel. Mr. Bass died Friday afternoon in a truck collision about four miles north of Dodson. Mr. Bass was the seventh traffic fatality in Winn Parish in 1957. The former local man was traveling alone in a pickup truck when he collided with a loaded gravel truck driven by James P. "Pleas" Greer of Jonesboro, formerly of Dodson. Greer and a passenger in his truck, James Rasberry of Jonesboro, received minor lacerations and bruises and were release after emergency treatment at a Jonesboro hospital. Jake Turner, colored, of Dodson, who lives a short distance from the accident scene, told an Enterprise reporter that he was standing near the road and saw Mr. Bass, an old acquaintance, drive along the highway. The two waved at each other, and Turner watched as the truck traveled down the highway several hundred yards, and then appeared to skid off the pavement, jerk back, and collide head on with the oncoming gravel truck. Mr. Bass was traveling sought and the gravel truck was going north. A crew member of a Rock Island train passing the scene at the time was also an eye witness to the accident. Mr. Bass was thrown through the windshield of his vehicle 46 feet from the point of impact. The motor and radiator were torn from the truck and hurled 54 feet. FUNERAL MONDAY Funeral services were held Monday at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Winnfield for the former Winnfield man. Rev. Robert Gate, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiated with burial in Winnfield Cemetery. Mr. Bass was born August 17, 1897 in Grant Parish. He was a longtime resident of Winnfield and formerly operated a blacksmith shop here. He had been living in Camden, Ark., for the past two years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Violet Daniels Bass of Camden; two sons, Haywood Bass of Mississippi City, Miss., and Stanley Bass with the U. S. Navy in Hawaii; one daughter, Mrs. G. C. (Lesker) Bates of Winnfield; three brothers, W. A. Bass of Winnfield, H. B. Bass of Kinder, and Elvin Bass of Pineville; three sisters, Mrs. D. A. Bates, Sr., 63, of Jonesboro, formerly of Winnfield, died Monday, February 6, 1984 at 11:55 p.m. in Jackson Parish Hospital after a lengthy illness. He retired from the Louisiana State Police as a lieutenant after 20 years service where he received numerous citations of merit. He also retired from the Louisiana Public Service Commission where he worked for Commissioner Ed Kennon. At the time of his death he was employed as an aide to Governor-elect Edwin Edwards. Grandmother Bazar, as she was known, had been in poor health for sometime. She was Winn Parish's oldest citizen at the time of her death, and had many friends throughout Winn and Grant Parish. She was a member of the Laurel Heights Baptist Church. Born on October 16, 1858, Grandmother Bazar had lived her entire life in Winn Parish. Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Sardis Baptist Church with Rev. H. J. Mott officiating. Interment was in the Sardis Cemetery with funeral directions under the direction of Southern Funeral Home.
