John D. Hammons, was killed in action in France July 21, 1943, according to a message received by his wife, Mrs. Lucille McKinney Hammons, here Wednesday about noon. Lt. Hammons had been reported missing in action in a message received by Mrs. Hammons here about August 10, 1943. Belief that he had been taken prisoner of war by the enemy was held by his family including his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dayton Hammons of Gaars Mill, until the message came Wednesday that he had died. Lt. Hammons went overseas in May, 1943 and was stationed in Iceland and England prior to participation in the invasion of Continental Europe. He was in the infantry. Commissioned at Louisiana State University, where he was a student in 1942, Lt. Hammons entered the service in September of that year. He was first assigned to Camp Robinson, Ark., then to Camp Miles Standish, Taunton, Mass., from where he was transferred overseas. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Lucille McKinney Hammons of Winnfield, parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dayton Hammons of Gaars Mill, one sister, Mrs. Talmadge Parker of Shreveport, one brother, Pvt. Samuel Dean Hammons now overseas with the U. S. Infantry.
