Hammons Reported Killed In Action July 21 Mrs. Lucille McKinney Hammons of Winnfield was informed by the War Department Wednesday that her husband, 1st Lt. John D. Hammons had been killed in action in France on July 21, 1944. Mrs. Hammons had been notified last August that her husband had been missing in action since that date, but no other information had been available concerning hime since that time. Lt. Hammons, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dayton Hammons of Gaars Mill entered service Sept. 14, 1942, as a 2nd Lieutenant, while attending Louisiana State University. Following his training at Camp Robinson, Ark., and Camp Miles Standish, Taunton, Miss., he was sent overseas in May, 1943. He was serving with the infantry. Besides his wife and parents, he has one brother, Pfc. Samuel Dean Hammons, former F. S. A. director of Sabine Parish, but now with the ninth army in Germany; and one sister, Mrs. Talmadge Parker of Shreveport. A graduate of the Gaars Mill High School, he was outstanding in both high school and college work and was prominent in religious activities.
