Funeral For Famed Lumberman

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 23, for Q. T. Hardtner, one of
Louisiana's outstanding lumbermen, who died in a Shreveport hospital on August
21 after a long illness.  Rites were held in the St. James Episcopal Church
in Alexandria.  Burial was in Mount Olive Cemetery in Pineville, with the Rev.
Tracy Lamar, pastor of the St. James Episcopal Church, officiating.

Hardtner, president of the Urania Lumber Company, Ltd., of Urania, La., was
regarded as the leading exponent of timber management in Louisiana and the
South.  He was a pioneer in the field of reforestation, although he was once
considered a crackpot by those without enough foresight to realize that his
ideas were sound.

In addition to the presidency of the lumber company, Hardtner was chairman of
the board of the Security National Bank in Alexandria; vice president of the
Hardtner Lumber and Supply Company of Shreveport, past president of the
Southern Pine Association, a 33rd Degree Mason, and Past Grand Master of the
Grand Lodge of Louisiana.

The Urania Lumber Company was organized by the late Henry E. Hardtner and E.
J. Hardtner, brother and father, respectively, of Hardtner.

"Quincy," as he was known to his many friends, had been in failing health for
many years.  He had undergone treatment at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in
Baltimore and at the Oschner's Clinic in New Orleans.  He was transferred to
the Shreveport hospital two weeks before his death.  He died at 6 p.m. on
August 21.

Mr. Hardtner was married to the former May Tannehill, sister of Mrs. R. S.
Walsh of Winnfield, and a half-sister of Estelle Tannehill, also of Winnfield.

Survivors of the deceased include his widow, one son, Q. T. Hardtner, Jr., of
Shreveport; one daughter, Mrs. Ernestine Hickman of Colfax, and four
grandchildren, Q. T. Hardtner III, Ann Hardtner, Mary Jane Hardtner, and
Quinton Hardtner Hart.

Pallbearers were six nephews, Joe James, Henry James, Aubrey White, James
White, George Tannehill, formerly of Winnfield, and David Crockett.  Hixson
Brothers Funeral Home in Alexandria will be in charge of the arrangements
there.
