Mrs. Verda Harlan Dies Monday A. M. After Long Illness

Funeral Services Tuesday Afternoon At Four O'clock


Mrs. Verda Peters Harlan, wife of Henry E. Harlan, died in the Baptist
Hospital early Monday morning following an illness of several weeks.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock at the First
Baptist Church after which interment was in the Winnfield Cemetery.  The Rev.
Eugene J. Phares of Good Pine, former pastor of the deceased when she resided
in Pelican, conducted the services assisted by the Rev.  H. H. McBride, pastor
of the First Baptist Church, the Reverend Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First
Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. H. H. Hysell, pastor of the First Methodist
Church.  Concluding rites at the grave were conducted by the Palestine Chapter
No. 55, Order of Eastern Star.

Mrs. Harlan was the daughter of the late I. A. and Helen Payne Peters,
descendants of two of the pioneer families of this section who resided at
Hudson and later Dodson.  She was educated in the public schools of the parish
and later attended Louisiana Tech at Ruston and Louisiana State Normal College
at Natchitoches.

She was married to Henry E. Harlan and to them were born four children all of
whom survive.  The children are W. H. Harlan of Camp Croft, S. C., Tandy P.
Harlan of Beaumont, Texas, Mrs. Shelton Creed of Dry Prong, and Mrs. Dwight
McCartney of New Orleans.  

Other surviving relatives are one brother, Ira Peters of Winnsboro and three
sisters, Mrs. A. A. Smith of Homer, Mrs. Tom Hearne of Shreveport, and Mrs. J.
E. Boyett of Banes, Oriente, Cuba.

Serving as pall bearers were members of the local post office staff where the
husband, Henry E. Harlan is employed, and included S. E. Jenkins, P. Hugh
Mercer, M. T. Crowe, Eck Bozeman, W. Leo Sowers, and Charles L. Smith.
