All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: May 17, 1972 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Oldest Deason Of Morning Star Church Dies Deacon George Hawkins, pioneer citizen of Winnfield and oldest deacon of Morning Star Baptist Church, passed away in the home of his niece, Mrs. Dorothy Betheley, New Orleans, La. Deacon Hawkins came to Winnfield in the late 1900s and united with the Morning Star Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Richard Nash. He became a deacon shortly after uniting with the church and remained a dedicated worker in the church until his death. He was married to the late Mrs. Bernice Phillip who preceded him in death. He was Sunday School teacher of Class No. 13, Sunday School teacher in the United Usher Board Association; instructor of Morning Star B. C. Usher Board; member of the District Deacon Aid Auxiliary; member of the Baptist Training Union; member of the New Hope Baptist Association; member of Isaac and Rebecca Lodge. He was an agent for many years for a life insurance company, New Orleans, La. When this company merged with Winnfield Life Insurance Company of Natchitoches, La., he was such a dedicated and conscientious worker that he continued in the insurance business until he grew too feeble to work any longer, which was only a few months before his death. Deacon Hawkins was born to the late Mrs. Mabalia Henry in Mississippi, December, 1882. He leaves to mourn his passing several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Dorothy Betheley, New Orleans; Mr. Herman Williams, Shreveport; and a host of friends. Funeral services were held for Deacon Hawkins in New Orleans, Wednesday, May 3, 1972 with interment in a New Orleans Cemetery.
