"Gabby" Hayes, 25, of Route 2, Dodson, was killed early Thursday morning, Oct. 22, when his pickup truck hit a tree off U. S. 84 about 18 miles west of Winnfield. Hayes apparently lost control of the vehicle on a curve as he headed west about a mile east of the Saline Dam Road, according to State Trooper Marlin Connor. The truck went off the road to the right and skidded along the shoulder, the crossed the highway going off sideways. The vehicle hit a pine tree broadside, the trooer reported, killing Hayes instantly. According to Connor's report, the truck was travelling at a high rate of speed and travelled 513 feet from the highway to the tree. The accident occurred at 1:05 a.m. It was the third fatality on Winn roads in 1970. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23 in the Zion Hill Baptist Church conducted by the Revs. E. B. Barton and Hedrick, with burial in the church cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield. Pallbearers were Earl Howard, Charles Stevens, Billy Thompson, Frederick Young, Charles Walker, and Billy DeBusk. Survivors include a daughter, Miss Carlet Jean Hayes, Marthaville; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Hayes, Dodson; four brothers, Darrell and Terry Hayes, both of Dodson; Prentice Hayes of Winnfield, and Wayne Hayes, Bossier City; a sister, Mrs. Billy Faircloth, Deville, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. J. B. Pardue.
