E. Heard, 93, Succumbs To Short Illness W. E. "Bill" Heard, 93, prominent businessman of Winnfield, who only retired several months ago, died in a local hospital Monday night, January 3, 1966. Mr. Heard was president and general manager of Peoples Hardware Company and was vice president and director of the Bank of Winnfield and Trust Company. Born in Lincoln Parish, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Heard of Ruston, and was the nephew of the late Louisiana Governor W. W. Heard. Mr. Heard came to Winnfield in 1902 with the Rock Island Railway, and that same year opened the hardware business which he operated almost to the time of his death. It was the oldest business establishment in town. He served Winnfield as Mayor part of one term during which time the water system was insstalled. He also served as a member of the Board of Alderman for several terms. As a youth, Mr. Heard joined the Shiloh Baptist Church in Lincoln Parish and was a member of that church at the time of his death. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jessie Nelson Heard, Winnfield; a brother, J. W. Heard of Hope, Ark.; two sisters, Mrs. R. R. Hightower of Ruston and Mrs. P. N. Anter (Auger?) Auger of Beaumont, Tex.; several nieces, among them Mrs. Hazel Nelson Warren of Shreveport, who made her home with the Heards until she graduated from college; and a number of nephews, among them Ted Andrews of Winnfield. Acting as pallbearers were Lloyd Warren of Shreveport, Courtney Reed of Ruston, Dr. W. M. Lawrence of Bernice, Joe Heard of Baton Rouge, Robert and Richard Heard, Don Walsh, Tracy Lee Harrel, Frank Shaw, and Stewart Storey of Winnfield.
