All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** William Wright Heard, Former Louisiana Governor, Dies Monday Night William Wright Heard, 73 years old, former governor of Louisiana, died at his home in New Orleans late Monday night. He had been ill with paralysis for more than six months. Funeral services were conducted from the Heard home at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, Dr. John Huff, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated. Interment was made in Metairie Cemetery. William Wright Heard was born in Union Parish April 28, 1953. He was a son of Stephen S. Heard and Mary Ann Wright Heard. His father was born in Georgia and settled in Louisiana while a young man. The boy, who achieved success in politics, began life on a farm and attended public schools. he served as clerk and deputy clerk of his home parish from 1876 until 1892. He was elected a member of the legislature in 1884 and four years later was promoted to a seat in the state senate. IN 1892 he was elected auditor of public accounts on an anti-lottery ticket. He served in that position for eight years. In 1900 he was elected governor, serving until May 21, 1904. After leaving the chair of chief executive he established his home in New Orleans and became vice president of the old State National Bank of that city. A few years later he was elected registrar of voters of Orleans Parish and served in that capacity for several years. Mr. Heard married Miss Isabel Manning Dec. 5, 1873. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Eva Dooley and Mrs. Luther E. Hall, and three sons, William A. Heard, Manning W. Heard, and Wilbur W. Heard, all of New Orleans. W. E. Heard, Joe R. Heard, and E. P. Heard of this place are relatives of his.
