He was 71. When he stepped out of office of mayor of Winnfield last June 30, former Mayor Henderson had 24 years of public service to the community of Winnfield. He served as city councilman for two terms and served the city as mayor for four terms of office. He took office as mayor the first time in 1970. He was 45 when the campaign began. Already he had devoted eight years to the city as a councilman. Four of those years on the council he served as mayor pro-tem. Henderson graduated from Winnfield High School and was a lifelong resident of Winnfield. He spent three years during World War II in the U. S. Army. Twenty-eight months of that time was spent in the Asian-Pacific portion of the fighting. As a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3800 he served as commander. In the Louisiana National Guard he served as Honorary Brigadier General. He was a member of Laurel Heights Baptist Church. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club. In his final address to the City of Winnfield in June of 1994, Henderson stated, "Serving the citizens of Winnfield has been a great source of joy and personal gratification in my life."**** Funeral services for Kenneth W. "Jack" Henderson will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 1995 in the Laurel Heights Baptist Church in Winnfield with Rev. Bob Braly, Rev. Charles Haley, and Dr. Calvin Phelps officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home, Winnfield. Mr. Henderson, age 71, of Winnfield, died Monday, February 20, 1995 at Winn Parish Medical Center, Winnfield. He was a native of Winnfield, La., and a veteran of World War II, served on the Winnfield City Council from 1962 until 1970 and from 1966 until 1970 served as City Councilman and Mayor Pro-Tem, served as Winnfield Mayor from 1970 until 1982 and again from 1990 until 1994. He was a member of Laurel Heights Baptist Church and the Winnfield Kiwanis Club, past commander of VFW Post 3800 in Winnfield. He was an honorary Brigadier General of the Louisiana National Guard and was a charter member of Louisiana Energy and Power Authority. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Henderson of Winnfield, Louisiana; one son, Wynn "Butch" Henderson of Camarillo, California; one daughter, Lynda Joyce Stevens of Bastrop, Louisiana; two brothers, Kendal Henderson of Downsville, Louisiana, and Lyndon "Judge" Henderson of Winnfield, Louisiana; one sister, Peggy Jordan of Winnfield, Louisiana; 6 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Pallbearers: Dr. Randolph Williams, Dr. Alfred Stevens, Bert Beams, Tommy Hughes, Mike Smith, Waymon Brantley, Bill Kelley, M. G. Perry. Friends may visit Southern Funeral Home from 4 until 10 p.m. on Wednesday and from 8:30 until service time.
