All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: January 12, 1983 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Nathaniel Holmes Funeral services for Nathaniel Holmes, Sr. of 1200 Roberson Street, Winnfield, Louisiana, were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 8, 1983, at Morning Star Baptist Church on Fuller Street in Winnfield, with Reverends Essex Harris and F. T. Eddines, the church pastor, officiating. Interment followed in Choctaw Island Cemetery in Irma, Louisiana. Nathaniel Holmes died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, January 2, in Humana Hospital in Winnfield after a lengthy illness. As special tribute, his older son, Dewayne, sand an unpublished spiritual song written by himself. Nathaniel was born July 11, 1912, one of fourteen children of Pompey and Mrs. Lillie Mae Grayson Holmes of Natchitoches, Louisiana. After moving to Winnfield in October, 1937 and uniting with Morning Star Baptist Church, he was ordained a deacon in 1940, served as chairman of the board of trustees, and was an active member of Sunday School Class No. 11 at the time of his death. He was also a member of King Solomon Masonic Lodge No. 81. He was retired at age 65 from Crown Zellerbach in Joyce, Louisiana where he served many years with that company and its predecessor, Tremont Lumber Company, as office porter and building custodian. Survivors include his devoted wife, Eleanor; two sons, Dewayne of Omaha, Nebraska, and Nathaniel, Jr. of Winnfield; three brothers, Charles of Chicago, Ill., and David and Moses, both of Grand Rapids, Michigan; two sisters, Mrs. Epsie Johnson of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Virginia Mays of Grand Rapids, Michigan; four grandchildren; also, two daughters-in-law, and a host of other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers were W. C. Burrell, Benny Mitchell, Herman Gardner, Charles Ball, Willie G. Johnson, and Marcus Jones. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Morning Star Baptist Church.
