John D. Holmes, Sr., Pioneer Citizen, Buried Sept. 4

John D. Holmes, Sr., 88, native of Ward Two, Winn Parish, and pioneer
businessman of Winnfield, died in a Winnfield hospital at 11:15 p.m. Sunday.
He had been retired 14 years.

Mrs. Holmes had been engaged in the mercantile business in Winnfield on a
number of occasions, having first entered the business in 1903.  Previous
to that he had been employed by People's Hardware and later by other
firms.  He and his brother-in-law, the late R. H. Fletcher opened the first
soft drink bottling works in this area.  In later years he also operated a
cotton gin in Winnfield and Jena.

Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist Church, of which he was a
member, on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the pastor, Dr. W. L. Holcomb, officiating.

Rev. R. H. Staples assisted.

Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home.

Acting as pallbearers were Dudley Shell, Newton Forrest, Harper Terrill, Matt
Milam, Jr., Homer Watson of Monroe, and Louis Wendell Holmes of Jena.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Josie Mathews Holmes, Winnfield; three sons,
Fletcher W. Holmes of Brunswick, Ga., Woodrow W. Holmes of Zwolle, and J. D.
Holmes, Jr., of Winnfield; two daughters, Mrs. T. M. Boyd of Shreveport, and
Mrs. C. A. Clark of Alexandria; one brother, H. Willis Holmes, of Jena; two
sisters, Mrs. Dora Parker and Mrs. Julia Parker, both of Winnsboro; 10
grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
