W. Holmes, Winn Native, Dies In Alexandria Mrs. Madge H. Holmes, an outstanding contributor in the field of science throughout the state and a Bolton High School teacher, died February 4, 1961, in an Alexandria hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Holmes, 42, was the wife of the late Oliver Wendell Holmes of Alexandria. Both are natives of Winn Parish. Named the outstanding teacher in science education, she received the Louisiana Teachers' Association award in November, 1960. She had taught at Bolton since September, 1958, having previously been a teacher at Lecompte High School from 1955 to 1957, where she organized a science club. During 1960 Mrs. Holmes was the science consultant at the pre-school workshop in Webster Parish. An outstanding worker in science fairs both in Alexandria and at Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, she is also the author of a teaching unit on radiation for the Louisiana State Department of Education. Her affiliations included both the National and State Science Teachers' Associations of Louisiana and the Junior Academy of Science of Louisiana. Mrs. Holmes was also a member of the Louisiana Science Teachers' Association, for which she served as treasurer and corresponding secretary. Survivors include in addition to her husband, two sons, Oliver W. Holmes, Jr., a student at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, and William Robert Holmes of Alexandria; one daughter, Brenda Frances Holmes of Alexandria; two brothers, Richard E. Henley of Salem, Ore., and John Y. Henley of the U. S. Army, stationed in Germany; two sisters, Mrs. Norman Graves of Pineville and Mrs. G. M. McCartney of Tullos; and her mother, Mrs. Love C. Henley of Pineville. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. February 7, from the Parkview Baptist Church of Alexandria, under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Thurston Brice and Rev. J. T. Ware officiated at the services, followed by burial in Greenwood Memorial Park of Pineville. Pallbearers included eight of her science students of Bolton High School.
